Cow Swats are inspired by a real life, lone cow who I’d pass on my way to school, as a child.
I never saw the cow eat. In fact, she rarely moved. She would stand and stare at me skipping by. Her only movement was a constant swishing of her tail, as she brushed away the flies that bothered her arse.
‘How boring it must be to be her,’ I would think.
At the end of her field was a scarecrow, yet the cow ignored him and was always there waiting to stare at me each morning and evening. She might have been trying to fathom why I walked past, twice a day, for no apparent or meaningful reason. Sometimes I wondered this myself; it wasn’t the best of schools.
