When Cassie met Paris at the engineering conference, she immediately could tell there were two sides to her.  Sure, Paris was brilliant…her work supporting Elian in the development of Shaper bots was essential (Elian claimed the glory, but Cassie knew it was Paris that had turned them into the wonders they now were) …but she was often joyless and uninspired at home.  Maybe it was because she had to take a backseat to Elian.  Or maybe she was just a brooding type.  At least when they stared into each other’s eyes she saw something that outweighed those things: an unfaltering, unconditional acceptance of all that Cassie was and was not.
