THE STORY BEHIND #003 TRECORUM
“Infernal conjurers possess knowledge of ancient magic, lost to the passage of time…”
My third piece in The Atomic Ballroom collection, Trecorum, takes inspiration from a little-known movie: Bedknobs and Broomsticks!
Published in 1971, this American-produced, British-set movie is way before my time! But the charming story, wonderful songs and musicals, and old-school animation layered over film, similar to other big movies from the period like Mary Poppins, would give a magical inspiration to this piece.
Set in both a fantastical world and the UK, this film featured a particularly prominant actor, Angela Lansbury, who portrayed an independent, and immensely powerful witch. Praciticing ancient magic lost to the passage of time, but only when most needed, a make-shift family is whisked away on an adventure to the deepest ocean, right to a War-related overtone at the end of the movie.

Angela Lansbury’s lush, curly hair, and accentuated, beautiful face shape was a major inspiration behind the silhouette of the piece.
Several magic incantations are said throughout the movie, with one of the most powerful spells unleashing an army of animated armour to defend her homeland. “ Treguna Mekoides Trecorum Satis Dee ” , she chants in a made up language, summoning knights of long past to battle.
This inspired me to create an ‘Elder Witch’ skilled in magical and dark arts and giving me the name ‘Trecorum’ as well as the first ‘Infernal’ race and ‘conjurer’ class traits in the collection.
My next lore drop will be on #004 Akuma Elektra, a fusion of cyberpunk and demonic aesthetics, and an eclectic background of inspiration!
